April 6, 1926

Tues., 6  Housework, etc. Snowing. Letter from Helena telling about Walter, in which she blames the ancestors for many troubles. Everything is white with snow. Grace is invited to a small tea party at Mrs. Hall’s in the afternoon. I am conscious of a terrible burden of guilt & responsibility for Gertrude & her bringing up. It was a time of trouble & sorrow for me, of which no one can understand. Scrape & wash a little table & paint it with black enamel.

An unusual expression of feelings. I expect this had to do somewhat with the problems with Henry back at the turn of the last century.
